Con il termine “manifattura additiva” (fabbricazione additiva, produzione additiva o anche nella versione inglese additive manifacturing) – si fa riferimento ad una tecnologia, inclusa nel Piano Transizione 4.0 (e, in precedenza, nei Piani Impresa 4.0 e Industria 4.0), grazie alla quale gli oggetti sono realizzati dalla sovrapposizione di più strati. Pertanto, a differenza delle tecnologie “sottrattive”, normalmente utilizzate in manifattura, il prodotto finito è formato senza necessità di utilizzare stampi o di rimuovere materiale a partire da una forma grezza. La stampa 3D è la maggiormente nota tra le tecnologie che rientrano in questa categoria.
